Until this oil spill happened in the gulf, the President seemed to get the message.

He seemed to be listening to the American people who are clamoring for energy independence.

Now he is backing off.

He and the Congress have been beaten and battered by liberal special interests who are intent upon shutting down America's energy production.

These liberal interests want to drill nowhere. They want to cripple America's energy economy. They want to force us to change our way of life.

The fact is that this is a terrible mess in the gulf, and it is going to take a long while to clean it up.

However, as Governor Haley Barbour recently said on CNN's Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer, "This is unprecedented. We've had more than 30,000 oil wells drilled in the Gulf of Mexico off our four states -- Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama -- in the last 50 years. And this is the first time there's ever been something like this, after more than 30,000 wells."

30,000 wells and 50 years... now we have had a terrible accident.

However, if you take the family car out for a Sunday drive and have an accident - if you mess it up - do you stop driving?

Of course you don't.

It is in our nation's economic and national security interest to reduce our dependence on foreign energy.

Yesterday the President indicated moratoriums on deep Gulf and Alaska drilling.

As Congressman Joe Barton, a leading conservative thinker on energy independence said, "I think our putting our drilling programs in those areas in a deep freeze is exactly the wrong approach."

He added, "All we're going to do is cause unemployment and cause the price of oil to go up, which is going to hurt our economy even more."
