YOU CAN HELP INCREASE DOMESTIC ENERGY PRODUCTION CONTACT THE U.S. MINERALS MANAGEMENT SERVICE NOW!
Every five years the U.S. Minerals Management Service (MMS) develops a Five Year Plan that determines where and how often offshore drilling for oil and gas will be allowed. Even though the current plans runs through 2012, the MMS is considering creating a new Five Year Plan beginning in 2010. This decision would play a vital role in speeding up bureaucratic approval for offshore drilling if the current moratorium is lifted. Right now, through September 15, the MMS is accepting comments from the public on this issue.
ENVIRONMENTAL EXTREMISTS ARE WEIGHING IN
As of August 8, nearly 80,000 comments on this issue have been received by the MMS. Most of these have been generated by well-funded left wing organizations such as Greenpeace and the Sierra Club that are against all increases in domestic energy production. They are using the slogan “Offshore is off-limits.” It is critical that the majority of the American people, who are tired of this extremist minority making our energy decisions, are heard.
The American Conservative Union is working to convince Congress to allow the 26 year ban on offshore drilling to expire on September 30. Even if we are successful, it will be up the federal bureaucracy to decide how and where oil and gas leases will be given out. By voicing your opinion by September 15, the MMS will know that Greenpeace does not speak for you.

THERE’S A LOT OF OIL AND GAS OUT THERE
The MMS estimates that there are currently 86 billion barrels of oil and 420 trillion cubic feet of natural gas recoverable from all federal offshore areas—three times the oil resources of Canada and Mexico combined and six times the natural gas resources of these two countries. By allowing left wing ideologues to control our energy policies over the last 20 years, we have deprived ourselves of our own resources, which has made us dependent on imported oil from unfriendly places. The result is $100+ barrel oil that acts like a tax, driving up the cost of everything we buy.
It’s up to us to continue to hold both the politicians’ and bureaucrats’ feet to the fire so we can reverse these failed policies.
LET MMS KNOW HOW YOU FEEL ABOUT OFFSHORE DRILLING
For all you do, we at The American Conservative Union thank you.
