Don't Hate Me Because I'm Beautiful

Everyone knows that Sarah Palin is hated because she is a threat to the liberal, big-government order. She and others like her embody a can-do, beyond-the-beltway brand of self-reliance that, if properly channeled, could alter the political landscape. The Democrats, by way of the mainstream media (or is it the other way around?) must destroy her now. Still, there remains another layer to what Bernard Goldberg labels "Palin Derangement Syndrome."

On Friday July 24's O'Reilly Factor, guest host Mike Huckabee was discussing Palin's political future. A former aide to Joe Biden suggested that she could join The Real Housewives of Wasilla County, a cutting reference to the tawdry reality series that has covered Orange County and New Jersey. Conservative commentator Amanda Carpenter called his diatribe insulting, to which he replied that indeed it was -- to the housewives of Wasilla!

Since Palin's debut on the national scene, critics, both left and right, have hinted that there is something sexual, even tawdry, about her ascension to prominence. Just before the 2008 election, 'conservative' Kathleen Parker wrote that a scholar confessed to her, "I'm sexually attracted to [Palin]. I don't care that she knows nothing." Parker quotes her husband saying that, "McCain the man couldn't mind an attractive woman all but singing arias to his greatness." She adds, "Cameras frequently capture McCain beaming like a gold-star schoolboy."

Most conservatives simply saw two candidates who felt enormous pride for each other. Furthermore, Sarah Palin the mother no doubt took great comfort in knowing that her eldest child, headed for Iraq, could well be under the command of a tested, proven hero like John McCain, thus her arias to his "greatness." Any romantic or sexual subtext was clearly in the mind of the critic.

Anyone who has followed Palin has heard numerous negative allusions to her good looks. Though often of questionable origin, they tend to take on a life of their own. The"slutty flight attendant" is a recent comparison, and with her looks, she must surely have had that affair with a family business associate. Some have even suggested, in hushed conspiratorial tones, that she is resigning because she is pregnant!

If it were true, I would say to Sarah, "You go, girl!" It has to enrage liberals (and a few on the right) that Sarah Palin is attractive. If only she looked like Linda Tripp did during the Clinton scandals (Tripp, by the way, had to get a facelift to ward off liberal taunts)! In the liberal mind, conservatives are supposed to look old, grim and sexless. To them, conservative women look like the Church Lady, as played by Dana Carvey on Saturday Night Live in the 80s, preferably with wrinkles and a wart on the end of her nose to complete the caricature.

They cannot stand that Sarah Palin, now in her mid-40s, is still not only pretty (both inside and out) but has fared quite well romantically, too. There's a saying among guys that a 'loose woman' is one who would be with anybody but you. Could it be that liberal men demean with invective what they want but cannot have? Surely some women resent that Sarah seems to have it all, including a rugged, handsome, supportive husband, and, no doubt, her romantic life has seen far less angst than that of the Sex and the City gang.

And therein lies the rub -- the feminists and the sexual revolutionaries were supposed to have all the fun, and then from nowhere comes this hick, this Christian conservative to prove that romantic and sexual fulfillment is not only compatible with traditional values, but, Heck, the two probably go together. Gloria Steinem, noted for, "A woman needs a man like a fish needs a bicycle," might well envy Sarah Palin. The feminist leader, who eschewed romance and monogamy, actually dated prominent, successful businessmen, among them publisher Mort Zuckerman and David Bale, whom she married in her 60s (her first).

Palin's life isn't full of curiosities and contradictions like Steinem's, but since the left cannot counter her ideas, they will try to destroy her personally. Just by living her life, she counters liberal dogma, such as the notion that leftists, free and uninhibited, enjoy sex more. No, they don't. Just because some engage in it with wanton abandon doesn't make it anything more for them than recreation. Wielding cutting-edge insults and rumors as political weapons does not count as sexual bravado, either, and liberals hate that as much as they hate Sarah Palin herself.
